These are books I consulted while writing “101 Things I Wish I Had Known Before I Started My Business”
This is a list of books (in order of usefulness and relevance of content) that I have consulted recently. Some are enormously detailed, some have great indexes, some have super graphics, and some are entertaining and easy to read. But none of them combine all four.
If you want a detailed treatment on any of the topics discussed in “101 Things I Wish I Had Known Before I Started My Business”, I would start with number 1, Business for Dummies, which is clear, comprehensive, and has a lot of useful content, and there is also an excellent index. But many of the topics in this book are not covered. If you want a really deep dive, then the Financial Times book is very good but really aimed at much larger businesses. The two “How To” books have lovely graphics and explain concepts nicely but don’t go into very much detail. The rest of the books on the list are useful but will take some studying and tend to be a little generic.
Starting & Running a Business All-in-One For Dummies
Probably the most useful book I consulted.
Business Startup 2021-2023
Massive amount of technical detail but really aimed at very well-financed startups with visions of grandeur.
How to Start Your Own Business
Super graphics but quite superficial
How Business Works
Lots of lovely graphics but aimed at larger businesses.
90 Rules for Entrepreneurs
Useful primer but no index and designed to be read from cover to cover.
The Ultimate Startup Book
Full of useful fact checks and quizzes but no index..
Starting Your Own Business
No index and quite superficial but designed around a number of tasks which will need to be completed at startup.
Do Start: How to create and run a business
Entertaining read, but no index. Nice resources but a little superficial.
Zero to One
Good index and quite narrative in style. Very useful as a starting place
